This grassy strip surrounded by industrial warehouses is the only remaining cemetery from the St. Andrew's Hospital. Originally built as the Norfolk County Asylum (1814 – 1915), it was later the Norfolk War Hospital (1915 – 1919) followed by the Norfolk Mental Hospital (1919 –1923) and finally was known as Thorpe St. Andrew's Hospital (1923-1998). During WWII it was also used for the troops returning wounded from the war. The original hospital cemetery (1814 - 1859) was located south of the hospital buildings and no longer exists; a plaque on this site commemorates the original cemetery and all those who were buried there. The plaque also says this burial ground was in use from 1859 to 1966, however other records show the ground was only consecrated in 1903. The burial ground from 1859 to 1903 must have been close by and again, this cemetery is the only remaining link to those burials. In the 1960s all the metal markers were sold as scrap and there is only one visible headstone. There is a memorial to the previous incarnations of the cemetery.
