Add PhotosThe Parish of Santa Catarina in Mexico City's Lagunilla neighborhood, founded in the 16th century, has undergone multiple reconstructions. The current 17th-century building, modified in 1692 and 1740, is a historical monument since February 9, 1931.
In 1537, the Brotherhood of Santa Catarina established a hospital and chapel, evolving into a parish in 1568 to meet spiritual needs. Damaged in a flood in 1629, it was reconstructed in 1640 and underwent further improvements in 1692 and 1740, featuring a Baroque facade and main chapel.
Renovations occurred, with the last in 1829 funded by silver object sales. Its strategic location and role in events made it central, but it closed temporarily after the 2017 earthquake. The 2022 restoration's first stage concluded, reopening in November.
The temple's simple tezontle and quarry facade, towers, bell gables, and historical events, like historian Fernando de Alva Ixtlilxóchitl's burial and Mariano Matamoros' baptism in 1770, add to its significance. During the 1847 U.S. invasion, Father Celedonio Domeco de Jarauta rallied resistance from the parish. The rich history and architecture make Santa Catarina Parish an invaluable heritage in Mexico City.
