Add PhotosFrom 1854 through 1859 Peterborough had one official Catholic burial ground, St Mary's Cemetery. The block where Confederation Square is today was the location of Peterborough's original "burial grounds" (a.k.a. North Ward cemetery). It was permanently closed on 15 May 1854. Half of this first burial ground had been for Catholic burials. In the early 1850's Mr. W. S. Conger spearheaded a movement to open the non-denominational Little Lake Cemetery just outside of the city. The Catholic population of Peterborough arranged to purchase a portion of this new cemetery and in mid 1854 consecrated it as St Mary's Cemetery. A short time later, in late 1859, it was closed to all future burials. The Roman Catholic Episcopal Corporation had purchased a larger plot of land for the Catholic departed, the beginning of what is now known as Saint Peter's Roman Catholic Cemetery. All the graves from St Mary's were apparently reinterred at St Peter's. Yet no known records exist to confirmed this. Certainly families who could afford the cost would have brought the bodies of their loved ones to lay with family in St Peter's, but it is possible at least some still lay in the grounds of Little Lake Cemetery.
