Add Photos1 Jan 1897: The remains of over 1,500 bodies have been removed from the old St. Peter's Cemetery up to date. The excavators will have finished their work in a few days, and the lot will then be turned over to the proper persons ready to be transferred to the city authorities, who will superintend the work of grading the lot. At present, according to the most reliable estimates, there are not more than 300 graves to be excavated in the cemetery. There was said to be buried between 1,800 and 2,000 bodies in the old cemetery. If this estimate is correct, and it is the most reliable obtainable since the records were destroyed, a few more days' work will clear the cemetery of the remains of the dead buried there, and it will then be ready for the graders. — The Commercial Appeal, 1 Jan 1897.
20 Jan 1897: The last bodies have been removed from the old St. Peter's cemetery and the property is ready to be turned over to the purchasers, the city of Memphis and the Memphis Medical College. — The Commercial Appeal, 20 Jan 1897.
1988: [Regarding the] land used as St. Peter's Cemetery until about 1896, when Shelby County bought it as a hospital site. About 1,250 sets of human remains were moved then, but another 500 to 700 are unaccounted for. As recently as the 1960s, construction would uncover several iron caskets. No remains or caskets have been found during the recent construction. — The Commercial Appeal, 13 Aug 1988.
