Add PhotosThe Waldeckpark is located in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg in the square of Alexandrinenstrasse, Alte Jakobstrasse and Oranienstrasse. The approximately two hectare area was first used as a plague cemetery around 1604 and served as a burial place for the Petri community from the end of the 17th century. From the middle of the 19th century, the cemetery was gradually turned into a green area, some of which could be used by the citizens free of charge from 1870.
In 1889 the park was named Waldeck Park after the politician Benedikt Waldeck (1802 – 1870). Even today, visitors can see the monument to the liberal politician here. However, the Waldeck monument was dismantled by the National Socialists in 1937 and only re-erected in the 1950s.
During the remodeling almost all the graves were removed, only the tombstone of the Royal Prussian equerry Ernst Ferdinand Ayrer was preserved. During the Second World War, the park was heavily destroyed and had to be reconstructed in the 1950s, during which a sports field was added. It also got back its former name.
