Add PhotosThe Church of Our Lady of Loreto, situated in Mexico City's Historic Center, is a significant colonial-era structure built between 1806 and 1819. Its distinct tilt results from the use of stones with varying weights, posing current structural risks and potential collapse, as per the archdiocese.
Constructed in the 19th century by the Count of Bassoco to honor Our Lady of Loreto, the church, designed by Ignacio Castera and Agustin Paz, faces structural issues due to the disparate weights of its stones. Despite challenges, it was consecrated in 1816, experiencing temporary closure in 1832 due to the risk of collapse.
Noteworthy for its neoclassical design and imposing dome, the largest in colonial Mexico City at the time, Loreto Church exhibits signs of interior deterioration, including missing frescoes and structural damage from cracks and uneven terrain subsidence.
The adjacent square, also named "Loreto," traces its origins to the 16th century and underwent development alongside the construction of the Convent of Santa Teresa la Nueva. Renovations over the years, including the removal of the first synagogue in Mexico in 1968, have shaped the square's evolution. Presently, both the church and square encounter substantial preservation and maintenance challenges, attributed to financial constraints.
