Add PhotosThe first Catholic cemeteries were churchyard cemeteries of parishes in existence before the Chicago Catholic Diocese was formed. Some of these pioneer cemeteries were Catholic burial grounds dating back to 1834.
Pinpointing actual dates is difficult because sometimes the cemetery started while the parish was still a mission church, and sometimes after the parish was formed. The first Catholic cemeteries were not in Chicago but in the rural regions. In the unincorporated settlement around Fort Dearborn, people were still being buried next to where they lived or in the fort cemetery.
After Chicago was established in 1833 an attempt was made to standardize burial practices. Prior to the formation of McHenry County in 1835-1836, then the division which created Lake County in 1839, Cook County extended north to the Illinois and Wisconsin border.
After the Diocese of Chicago was formed in 1844, parish cemeteries were established. In 1839, St. Anne Church (in present day Lake Bluff) was a small mission parish established on the west side of Green Bay Road and on the farm of William and Mary (Murphy) Dwyer.

On September10, 1844, William and Mary (Murphy) Dwyer officially sold 1 ½ acres south of their home and south of St. Anne's Church to Bishop William Quarter of the Chicago Diocese for the sum of $2.00 for a cemetery. St. Anne's Cemetery was consecrated in 1844 and later abandoned in 1859.
On October 14, 1916, Archbishop George Mundelein deed the St. Anne's Cemetery to Robert Dady at his request in order to relocate the graves of his parents Owen Dady and Margaret (Conners) Dady with the stipulation that all graves would be relocated.
