Add PhotosSituated on present-day Isabel la Católica Street, this site has a historical lineage tracing back to the 16th century, originally known as Oidores Street owing to the presence of esteemed officials. Subsequently, it acquired the name Espíritu Santo Street, associated with a church and a hospital, before finally adopting the appellation Isabel la Católica.
At present, the sole remnant of the erstwhile church and hospital is a plaque dating back to 1600, now replaced by the Spanish Casino. Established in the 16th century by Alonso Rodríguez de Vado and Ana de Saldívar, this noble foundation earned distinction for its generosity and philanthropy.
Despite challenges and opposition, administration of the Espíritu Santo hospital was transferred to the Hypolite friars. Following a legal dispute in 1608, control shifted to the Brothers of Charity, who efficiently managed the institution for over twenty-five years.
Tragedy struck in 1634 when a devastating flood wreaked havoc on the hospital and church. Despite restoration endeavors, structural threats emerged, prompting Father Prior Fray Basilio Patricio Martínez to embark on the monumental task of reconstruction, successfully completing the work in 1715.
During its titular celebration, the locale buzzed with music and festivities. A crucifix in one of the cloisters became the centerpiece of the "Desagravios de Cristo" (Atonements of Christ). This celebration, accompanied by splendid banquets, evolved into a joyous occasion fostering camaraderie, thereby imprinting a rich history on Isabel la Católica Street.
