The Old Melbourne Gaol was in operation from 1842 to 1929 and was the scene of 133 hangings. It housed both serious criminals, petty offenders, the homeless and mentally ill. Some bodies such as those of Ned Kelly and Frederick Deeming were exhumed and reburied at Pentridge Prison following the closure of the gaol. During the closure of the Old Melbourne Gaol to make way for the Working Men's College, old burial markers carved into the prison walls were removed and used in other construction projects, such as sea walls. The exact location of the remainder of the burial sites remains unknown.
