The origins of the church rest in a prayer meeting held in the house of William Foster, a newcomer to the village of Bracknell, and occasionally visited by Thomas Burgwin, a Baptist minister. In 1801 the latter licensed a house in the village as a place of worship, and in 1808 a building was adapted as a meeting house and licensed for worship. The congregation applied to Broad Street Independent Chapel, Reading, for help providing a non-Baptist minister. The church was officially formed in 1813.

By 1820 the building was in a dangerous condition, and a chapel and schoolroom were built in 1821, although the new chapel was not formally licensed until 1828. It was demolished in 1858, and a new chapel and schoolroom was built, opening in February 1859.

In 1908 a secession from the church formed Bracknell Pentecostalist Church. In 1965 the Congregational Church joined with local Presbyterians, who had no building but agreed to supply and pay for the stipend of a Presbyterian minister. The new church was known as Bracknell Congregational/Presbyterian Church, and was managed by a Church Committee comprising the Congregational deacons and Presbyterian elders until 1970, when joint elders were appointed. The two congregations maintained separate membership records, but shared finances and general management. A formal Sharing Agreement was made in 1971, and in 1972 the two churches united nationally to form the United Reformed Church.

In the 1960s the church site in the High Street was subject to compulsory purchase by Bracknell Development Corporation. The old church closed in September 1967. (Berkshire Record Office)
