Der Katholische Friedhof Haus-Horl-Straße wurde zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts in der Ortschaft Gerschede eröffnet, einem Teil der Bürgermeisterei Borbeck. Aufgrund der stark ansteigenden Bevölkerungszahl um die Jahrhundertwende wurde das Friedhofsgelände schließlich als neue Begräbnisstätte für die Verstorbenen katholischen Glaubens eröffnet. Das Grundstück am Pausmühlenbach wurde der katholischen Gemeinde von einem Großgrundbesitzer zur Verfügung gestellt.
Als Gerschede 1915 nach Essen eingemeindet wurde, fiel die Verwaltung des Friedhofs Haus-Horl-Straße an die städtische Pfarrei der Stadt. Nach Ende des Ersten Weltkriegs wurde das Grundstück erweitert. Auch ein Denkmal, welches an die Gefallenen des Ersten Weltkriegs erinnern soll, wurde auf dem Friedhof errichtet. Anfang der 1950er Jahre wurde der gesamte Friedhof neu gestaltet. Auf dem Friedhofsareal sind Kriegsgräberstätten aus dem Zweiten Weltkrieg zu finden.
Der Friedhof umfasst eine Gesamtfläche von etwa 3,2 ha.
