Originally four log structures to house paupers, a smokehouse and caretaker's house were built.
The County Home Farm was self-sustaining.
In 1913 the facility was rebuilt, with modern brick buildings having electric lights and a water / sewerage. Separate buildings were set for infectious diseases and those of unsound mind.
Part of the land was sold and became a prison, this area is now the Fairgrounds.
April 1963 the County Home facility was closed, residents were distributed to other institutions.
Fall 1972 Bernhardt Industries of Lenoir purchased 100 acres for a plant and by 4 December 1972 it was reported that the 2 acre paupers' graveyard had been excavated.
Of 506 graves opened, only 162 held remains which were carefully transported to St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery of Statesville for a mass burial. (Because the majority of remains could not be moved, a separate cemetery is being set for FindAGrave.)
This Cemetery was also referred to as "County Cemetery" on some death certificates.
