Fort Ellis, east of Bozeman, Montana, was established by the US Army 27 Aug 1867. Troops from the 2nd US Cavalry and the 7th Infantry participated in campaigns of the Indian Wars. The fort was closed in 1886. Most or all of those buried in the post cemetery were disinterred, and in
1887 moved by train to Fort Missoula, where they are now interred at the post cemetery. This move was completed by contractors from Helena, at the rate of $10 per body for 36 bodies. The cost of moving the coffins as freight on a passenger train would have been the equivalent of two passenger fares, so to save money, they used a freight train. and did not go smoothly. These operators were accused of acting in a manner that was "inhuman, indecent, and done in a ghoulish manner." A grand jury was not able to find a law to use to punish the contractors. This cemetery no longer exists. The sources for the death dates in the memorials are the Record Book of Interments for the Fort Elllis cemetery.
