Add PhotosThe 10th Duke of Hamilton, Alexander Hamilton (1767-1852), built the Mausoleum within the grounds of Hamilton Palace. He and his ancestors were moved to the Mausoleum in 1852.
By the 1920s subsidence and flooding from the River Clyde affected the Mausoleum. In April 1921, the remains of the 17 members of the House of Hamilton were removed, and re-buried in Hamilton's Bent Cemetery, except for the 11th and 12th Dukes who were re-buried on the Isle of Arran.
