When Green Hill Cemetery was established in 1854, no African Americans were permitted to be buried in the main part of the cemetery. There was a section set aside on the east side of the cemetery where African Americans had been buried on the land before it was purchased by the Green Hill Cemetery. Slaves of the white owners were buried in this section and part of this area was used as a pauper cemetery. This section is located on the Green Hill Cemetery map. A bridge called the Bulleye Bridge was located on the south side of the cemetery near the railroad. On "July 12, 1856 James Malory hanged himself in the county fail and was buried near this bridge." A list in the Episcopal Church records some 30 blacks buried in Green Hill. in 1878, the free blacks were buried in the new African Black Cemetery that later was named Mt. Hope.
