Add PhotosSt. Carden's Chapel is known to have existed in Kirkton (Golspie Parish) since 1275. In 1845, The New Statistical Account of Scotland noted, "A portion of the wall of the old church or chapel of this parish still remains and forms part of the fence which encloses the burying ground formerly used. This cemetery contains the remains of many of the Earls of Sutherland as signified by a plain stone placed in the old church wall bearing this epitaph: 'In hoc diruto cæmeterio Sutherlandiæ plurimorum comitum cineres conquiescunt.'" In 1911, the 2nd Report and Inventory of Monuments and Constructions of the County of Sutherland stated, "To the W. of Kirkton farm-house, in a wood between the road and the steading, is a neglected graveyard. The farm-house is said to be built on the site of the Chapel dedicated to St Carden." According to CANMORE, "The graveyard is now partly overlaid by a road."
