This cemetery is on the southern edge of the grounds for the old Austin State School, which was established in 1917 and whose history can be read in more detail here: https://tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/sba08. The school was originally known as the State Colony for the Feebleminded, and was referred to as the Austin State School for Defectives (see 1935 map https://www.loc.gov/item/sanborn08415_006/), and the State School for Feebleminded (see 1939 map https://s3.glo.texas.gov/glo/history/archives/map-store/index.cfm#item/452). The Austin State School was predominantly for women, and a rural site for men was established in 1933, the Austin State School Farm Colony. Later, the Farm Colony became the Travis State School. The cemetery on the Austin State School grounds endured some difficulty over the years as nearby development increased and records were inadequate or lost, if any ever did exist. A plaque was erected at the cemetery in 1955 by the superintendent, listing the names of 135 residents buried there.
