The company town of Sankanac itself was once home to over 500 skilled laborers, the majority of whom were black southerners who had come north from the quarries of Richmond, Virginia. Many brought with them their strong Baptist faith.
As the quarrying boom which precipitated the arrival of migrant workers and their settlement wound down, their church and cemetery gradually fell out of use, the last reference being in 1914.
Today nothing remains of Sankanac other than the quarry pit and, it is said, a few gravestones in the cemetery.
