Old Cemetery
"The existence of this burial place is well established historically, but careful search and repeated investigation in its reputed vicinity have failed to locate it. It is believed to have existed at the east side end of Shaker Hill, in the north central section of the town, on the north side of the road, possibly just before the road branches off to descend the eastern slope of Jones (formerly Choate) Hill."
It is believed that this burial place was used by the Shakers, and possibly also by townspeople, during the time the Shakers were located on Shaker Hill, prior to their move to the present site of La Salette. Burials in it are mentioned in George W. Johnson's Annals and Recollections and in Shaker records. The location of this cemetery has yet to be pinpointed. From a conversation recorded by George W. Johnson on September 29, 1869, he says that Abigail Bowdoin (1781-1875) told him that Elizabeth (Haynes) Gage, a Shaker, wife of John Gage, was buried at the "East end of Shaker Hill."
Further research reports that the following people were also buried in this general vicinity on the east end of Shaker Hill Road: James Mills, on the south side of the road, near his house; John Johnson, on the south side of the road, in an orchard; James Jewett, on the south side of the road, in an orchard; ( ) Sargent, on the south side of the road, in an orchard; Eliz "Betsy" Johnson, b. February 8, 1791, d. December 5, 1811, sleeps on the hill.
