The church is on a raised site, dominating the centre of the village, with the ruins of the castle at the West end. St John's consists of a 12th century chancel extended around 1300, with a north vestry added in the mid-19th century; a 12th century nave with a 14th century north aisle and a South porch, and a 15th century West tower. The North aisle was rebuilt in 1845; the chancel was restored in 1862 and the rest of the church in 1868. Romanesque features recorded here are the nave and chancel South doorways.
