Joshua Daniel Pritchett, III, was the property owner in 1867, when the cemetery was begun. He purchased the property for $655.00 from R. A. Rutherford on 26 Dec 1867 of which he paid one-half the sum of $327.50 in cash and paid the remainder 12 months for the date of sale. The parcel was taken off a tract of about 3200 acres originally patented to the heirs of E. Daniels. (Source: Deeds 1866-70, Grayson co., TX, Vol S, LDS 11290293, pg 54)
Joshua designated the far northern parcel of the property for a family burial plot that was eventually opened to other families who desired a burial place for their loved ones. The far west of the cemetery (now covered in brush) was designated for all the victims of the hurricane/tornado that virtually wiped out the city of Savoy. In looking toward the cemetery, by turning to the south you
can see the two-story home Joshua built for his bride about 1869. Col William Langner (ret. Air Force) lives there now.
Upon Joshua's death, Feb 1902, the farm was sold to the Jenkins brothers. One of their descendents, Jonnie Jenkins (shown in photo above) married the then Major Wm Langner, and when he retired in 1976, they moved back to the farm. Jonnie died in 1980, and is buried just inside the front gate of the cemetery to the right. The Colonial still lives there.
Joshua and his wife, Eliza Morton, are buried in the cemetery. I've put the photo of their Headstone on the "find a grave" site.
If I can be of any help with the history, etc. of this area, please let me know.
Jan Pritchett-Litvin
