Add PhotosThe POWDER RIVER SUPPLY DEPOT was briefly populated by members of the Dakota Column of the Terry/Custer Expedition on their way to their fate at the Little Big Horn in June of 1876. The expedition started from Fort Abraham Lincoln near Bismarck ND on May 17, 1876 and arrived at the Depot in early June. The wagon train was left here under guard, and the cavalry and mule train departed the supply depot toward their destiny in Montana on June 25-26, 1876. On July 4, 1876, Pvt. William George, wounded in battle at the Little Big Horn, died while being transported back to Fort Lincoln and was buried here; and on August 2, another skirmish with the Indians and the military at the depot resulted in the death of a scout named Brockmeyer. The supply depot was abandoned by July 20, 1876 as the military moved to establish a permanent cantonment (Fort Keogh) on the Tongue River.
Of additional interest: Directly across the river from the Depot is a Lewis and Clark site dated July 30, 1806. This is marked on the Montana Road & Recreation Atlas.
