With the need for more burial spaces for the City of Lucerne, Friedhof Friedental opened in 1885. City architects designed the beautiful park-like grounds with wide winding paths. The first Jewish burial section in the city was made to the left of the gate. In 1907 a children chapel with section opened. Even though the Catholic population protested against this, a cremation association was founded in 1905 to to start a crematorium. After the twenty-year delay from the protest, the first cremation was done September 14, 1926. An urn cemetery and later a hall was finished by 1960. The are memorials for both World War I and World War II. Since many German-speaking Swiss citizens fought for Germany and the French-speaking fought for France, there are separate memorials for each. Beautiful marble statue markers are noted on graves dates 1900 to 1920. Many famous citizens of Lucerne are buried here.
