The Hunts Point Slave Burial Ground is located in the Hunts Point neighborhood of The Bronx within the grounds of the Joseph Rodman Drake Park, a few blocks from P.S. 48. The location is most likely in the south west location of the park near the willow tree.(Note: From primary history documents like wills, newspaper accounts and old maps, it turns out the cemetery was "across the road" from Drake Park- the Hunt, Leggett and Willett family burial plots that date back to colonial times. It's most famous grave honors well-known 19th century poet Joseph Rodman Drake, but the adjacent Slave Burying Ground has disappeared without a trace.) Note: There are no remaining gravestones evident in the grassy area. Ground penetrating radar studies have identified the locale of graves. The site is accessible via public transportation off the 6 and 2 subway lines. The Bx46 and the Bx6 local buses will drop you within a couple blocks.
The historical photographic and documentary evidence supports the existence of a slave burial ground historically located on the south side of Old Hunts Point Road across from the family burial ground of the Hunt, Leggett, and Willett families known today as Drake Cemetery." The site contain slave burials from the three major white families who lived and were buried there. They were the nanny, coachman, farm laborer, wood cutter, drover, blacksmith, cook, groom, carpenter and seamstress who were part of those farms in the 18th and 19th centuries.
.
Scientists from the US Department of Agriculture later confirmed human remains buried in that area using imaging radar. HPSBG applied for landmark status and has received a letter from New York State saying the site meets criteria and is eligible. The Hunts Point Slave Burial Ground Project has been included in the Memory and Landmarks: Reports of the Burial Database Project of Enslaved Americans.
