Search St. James (Lybrand) Lutheran Church:

My original description:The Lybrand Church (now gone) and its cemetery (now under the waters of Lake Murray) were stood on an elevated piece of ground about 5 miles west of present day Macedonia Lutheran Church & was located of the Saluda River and west of Bear Creek...less than a mile from their confluence. The old church was built by 1821 & was a 20 by 40 foot log building and abandoned by 1890 after Macedonia Lutheran Church was built.

Duplicate George Lybrand memorial (162636867) by Marilyn B. (contributor # 48976511) indicates that the grave stone is above water in the woods on Ballentine Lane.

June 2018 correction: From excellent Find a Grave contributor, Faye F. Cannon (member # 47112994): "Please research your information relating to the location of St. James (Lybrand) Lutheran Church. It was NOT located in Newberry County, but instead, was located in Chapin, Lexington County, SC. On several occasions when Lake Murray waters were drawn very low, I visited the homesite of the old Rauch-Lybrand home, which was the home of Jack Lybrand and later, his daughter, Mary Ann Lybrand Rauch. My mother stood on the point where the home was located, looked across Bear Creek, and pointed to the location where the Lybrand Church had once stood. There are old maps available which identify the location of the old church. Please correct this location so others won't be confused and lead to think that the cemetery is located in Newberry County. If you will check, Timberlake Plantation is located in Lexington County, and Bear Creek doesn't enter Newberry County until near where it crossed Hwy 76. Thanks for making this correction on the cemetery information."
