Yazidi refugees from northern Iraq established this national cemetery near Malcolm, Nebraska. The cemetery is a 20 acre plot of land which was purchased in October 2016 by the United Yazidi Community of America, a Lincoln, Nebraska nonprofit agency striving to unify the Yazidi Community. The cemetery is for all Yazidis across the United States.
The Yazidi people, also referred to as Yezidi by some, are of Kurdish decent and have long faced persecution for their religious beliefs. The highest concentration of Yazidi people is currently in Lincoln, Nebraska. A gathering was held in June 2017 to celebrate the creation of this cemetery which will help to preserve the heritage of the Yazidi people in America.
