Dumfries (Holy Cross) Roman Catholic Cemetery
AKA Holy Cross Graveyard
Monument in the cemetery reads:
"This Cemetery of HOLY CROSS was solemnly consecrated in the presence of the Catholic Congregation on the 15th April 1855. By the Right Revd. Dr. Gillis, assisted by the Revds. H. Small & G. McMabon, Dumfries, J. Strain, Dalbeattie & A. Smith, Kirkcudbright."
This cemetery is quite small, about 150 yards long and wedge-shaped and backs on to the older and much larger St Michael's Churchyard.
The Holy Cross was opened in 1853, has been out of use with no burials since about the 1920's. The new Catholic Cemetery is (St Andrew's AKA CALSIDE Cemetery.
The Holy Cross Cemetery was heavily overgrown and not maintained with fallen headstones. In about 1983 a team of volunteers worked on the clean-up project, whereby, smaller stones were placed against the walls and cemented in, large broken headstones were stacked - as of August 2017 - several headstones remain stacked.
The records of burials are held by the Catholic Church and as 1998 were not open to the public.
There are three Commonwealth War Graves in this Cemetery.
