"Whereas there is a family burial ground on our land established by the mutual consent of all my family and relations ..."
On 12 November 1898, Reuben White and his second wife Julina (Farmer) White formally established the White Family Burial Ground (Sumner County, Tennessee deed book volume 46, page 190) as a trusteeship in perpetuity.
The cemetery was already in use prior to 1898. It consisted of about 98 square poles (roughly 6/10 of an acre). It was situated southeast Reuben White's residence and immediately west of William Jernigan's farm in Civil District 16 (southwest of present-day Portland).
