The Erie County Poor House Cemetery, part of the almshouse grounds, was active from 1851 to 1913. Men, women, and children were interred there: each in an only temporarily marked grave with incomplete documentation as to who was buried where. For over 100 years, they remained unmarked and unnamed.

The University at Buffalo acquired the almshouse property and, in 2008 and 2012, needed parts of it for new facilities on UB's South Campus. During construction human remains were discovered. Overall, a total of 372 separate individuals were exhumed. For over 5 years, attempts were made to establish the identities of these remains. Finally in 2017, they were reinterred at the Assumption Roman Catholic Cemetery in Grand Island, Erie County, New York, USA.

If further construction uncovers more bodies, they will also be reinterred at Assumption Roman Catholic Cemetery.
