The church and churchyard were consecrated in July 1831. This was the third church built in the early 19th century to accommodate the growing population of Huddersfield. A burial register is available for this churchyard. Just over 1,600 burials took place up to 1917, with only a handful after 1898.
The church was closed after the second world war with the final service conducted on 15 April 1956 by the Bishop of Wakefield. The location was acquired by the University of Huddersfield and the building, St. Paul's Hall, was converted into a concert hall in 1980.
