Search Washington Family Cemetery - Haywood Plantation:

Cemetery located on a wooded tract of land once referred to as the "Lands of Wakefield", owned by George Washington's father and grandfather.

Specifically, the adjoining two farms, "Blenheim Plantation" and "Haywood Plantation", were a part of the "Lands of Wakefield". The land encompassing the two plantations became owned by Augustine Washington I (1694-1743), the son of Lawrence Washington and his wife Mildred Warner, married 1715 Jane Butler. Augustine Washington II (half-brother of President George Washington) and Anne Aylett lived on the land, followed by their son Capt. William Augustine Washington.

Following the burning of George Washington's home at "Wakefield" on Christmas Day 1780, on the adjoining land, the "Blenheim Plantation" house was built for Capt. William Augustine Washington. In 1782, he is listed as having 69 slaves.

In 1783, the family moved into the adjoining "Haywood Plantation" house.

Blenhein Plantation was later occupied by his daughter Sarah Tayloe Washington, who had married her cousin Lawrence Washington (1791-1875). Their 11 children were born at Blenheim Plantation from 1820-1846. The family is buried at the Washington Cemetery, Oak Grove (location not documented), with exception of George A. Washington.

Access Road is at 737 Popes Creek Road, midway between Wakefield Corner (Rte 3 & Rte 204 Popes Creek Road) and George Washington Birthplace National Monument, north of Popes Creek. Appears to be at the top of a wooded ridge adjoining the farms.

The "Haywood" home is closest to the cemetery (run by Blenheim Organic Farms) and the "Blenheim" house is further west of the cemetery.
