St Mary's church dates back to the 15th century, in it's current form, but there would have been a much earlier building dating back to the 13th century.
There are some brass memorials inside the church to Bishops in the Chancel and beneath the altar in addition to one at the east end of the north aisle. According to the illustrated guide-booklet, there are 383 gravestones in the churchyard most notable of which is a medieval table top tomb said to contain the remains of the young Dukes of Suffolk.
The churchyard closed in 1883 at which point a new cemetery was opened on Lucks Lane called Buckden Cemetery. Within the last 30-40 years, an area was set aside for internment of ashes and that part is still open.
