The church was restored in 1862 by Rev. Thomas Keble, when two Roman altars were found that are now part of the British Museum collection. Today the tower and chancel are the only parts of the medieval church that remain. The spire, which rises almost 900 feet above sea level, is visible from many miles around, and is said to have been used by the German Luftwaffe in WWII during the Battle of Britain to mark their course on bombing raids of nearby Gloucester.
