Chipchase Castle has its origin in the mid-14th century when it was four-storey battlemented tower. It expanded over the centuries under the ownership of the Heron family. In 1734, the castle and estate were purchased by John Reed, a Newcastle upon Tyne banker, who built the chapel. He was the first person to be interred there.
