The story begins with the purchase of this land from the late Honorable Joseph Cunard on February 7, 1842 by Joshua Alexandre, James Blackhall, Hugh A. Clare, Alexander Campbell and John Doran, the first Trustees of the Saint John's Church of the Established Church of Scotland.
Many of those buried in the church yard to not have headstones; however, a plaque erected in 2007 lists the names of all those buried within, along with the following information regarding unnamed persons:
A Captain's body , washed ashore at Shippagan Gully in the 1890's. is buried here.
Doctor Thomas Baldwin and John Doran cared for 165 Irish immigrants who landed in Shippagan on the ship "Lisa Liddel" in 1847. Many died of fever on the way over and it is not known if any who perished are buried here.
