The parish of West End was formed in 1834 out of the much older Parish of South Stoneham. The Church began as a Chapelry to South Stoneham and the first incumbent (1843-76) was Rev. Dr Hatherell, after whom the Close that adjoins the church and hall buildings are named. The original church building was struck by lightning in 1875 and replaced by a larger church a few years later.

The St James burial register dates from 1840 and is held at Hampshire Archives. A second burial ground for the parish, St James Church Cemetery, was opened further north in West End. Both the Churchyard and Church Cemetery are now closed to further burials and cremations.
