The Jackson Colony flourished for a little more than a decade until major drought, caused by light snows in the Colorado mountains, forced the settlers to move on. In 1900, more land opened up to homesteaders, and many of these families resettled near Kirkland, NM and Mancos, CO.

The cemetery sits on the mesa overlooking the site of the abandoned Jackson colony, with three graves remaining, two of which are unknown. All others that were buried there were reinterred at either the Kirkland or Mancos cemeteries by their loved ones.
