According to PRAIRIE COUNTY, ARKANSAS CEMETERY INSCRIPTIONS by M.H. Sickel, 1989, the Ballowe Cemetery is a burying ground for as many as 22 individuals. Many fell victim to small pox about 1905-1910. It was believed that measles and small pox victims should not be interred in public cemeteries due to health risks. This is a small knob in the center of a privately owned farm. Descendants of these families have kept the memory of their loved ones alive for several generations. In the last decade a fence has been erected to protect the cemetery. The Ballowe family descendants organized a ceremony at the time they erected a military gravemarker for their Civil War patriot. This is an inactive cemetery, today. Access to this property is with permission only. The cemetery is not very visible during crop-growing season.
