The old cemetery used to be in Via del Monte and it was created in 1446, when Michael Norimberga bought a vineyard to make a cemetery for himself and his coreligionists. The Jews from Trieste buried their dead there for four centuries. In the middle of the nineteenth century the cemetery became too small,so it was extended until it reached the slopes under the Castle of S. Giusto. The offer from the municipality to take care of the espenses for the new cemetery was accepted. In 1843 a new Jewish cemetery was built in Via della Pace, 4 near the Catholic cemetery of Sant'Anna. The area of the ancient cemetery remained untouched until 1909 when the municipality dispossessed the whole slope northwest of the hill of the Castle of S. Giusto to make a park out of it (today it is called Parco della Rimembranza, that is Remembrance Park) and Jewish community was forced to remove the relics and transport them to the actual cemetery. Exceptions were made for the corpses and the graves of the Rabbis which were carried to the new cemetery.
