Search GW Lewis Graveyard:

This Graveyard is located on the old Barney Travis farm. Leaving Indian Mound in direction of the Methodist Church and continuing on the Rorie Holler road keeping your attention to the left of the road there is a ford in the creek and up this farm trail you can reach the Graveyard. It is about 1/2 mile from the ford in the creek. Not far from the Lewis spring.

It is located on private property.

I named it GW Lewis Cemetery because George Williamson Lewis was the owner at the time of the first burial.

The Graveyard was changed from what I remember as a boy. It was originally up the ridge at the edge of the woods. My Grandmother (Ida Mae Lewis) told me a family story about the Graveyard. Seems it was originally the play house of two little girls, Daughters of George Williamson Lewis, they enjoyed their playhouse so much that one day they told their parents that when they died they wanted to be buried there. A short while later they both died from the whooping cough. They were buried in the location of their beloved playhouse. They were the first buried there.

I believe these two little girls were Onie and Ozella as noted here.

In the 60's the Lewis family decided to move the Graveyard down the ridge and out of the woods. They had a large stone engraved with the names found here. The monument is enclosed by a fence. It is not known what happened to the original stones. They were large stones as I remember them as a small boy.

There are two other tombstones in the enclosure:
They were moved from the other Lewis Cemetery out close to Big A.
The Tombstones are those of my Great-Grandfather and Grandmother:
George Rufus Lewis b. 27 Mar 1843 d. 19 Jun 1921
Cero Gorda Lewis Lewis b. 15 Nov 1858 d. 25 Sep 1937

I did not enter these because they are already on the other Cemetery. And they were buried there, it was the families wish to move the stones to this location.

I believe someone told the story that when Rufus died the backwater was up so high that they could not get to this location and that is why he was buried at Big A.
