In some sad times between 1871 and 1874, George Schaffer buried at least five members of his family on his Truckee, California land -- his father, William (d. 1874), his mother, Mary (d.1871), his infant granddaughter Caddie (d.1872) and the last two of his own eleven children, toddlers Charlie (d.1873) and Margarita.
Over a century later what was once George's property had changed hands several times, including a 1963 sale to Truckee land developer C.S. Beavers. Each time, the small plot that held George's family members was protected by deed restrictions that precluded its'sale.
When new owners in the 1970s wanted the graves moved to make way for a residential development, there was pushback from Truckee citizens and preservationists who believed it was wrong to disturb the sacred place where loved ones had been laid to rest.
That is how it came to be that this small cemetery has been entrusted to the ownership and care of the Truckee Historical Society, which maintains the small plot within an active residential subdivision in northern California.
