The ancient parish of Stottesdon contains Farlow, Oreton, Bardley, Chorley, and 14 other villages.
St. Mary's Church is pre-Norman with parts that may date at 450 AD, although the bulk of the church is post-Norman.
The church is an ancient structure. It was built by Robert de Bellême, 3rd Earl of Shrewsbury, who presented it to Shrewsbury abbey.
The tower is late C11, masking earlier west doorway with remarkable lintel and tympanum, early C11 or possibly pre-Conquest. The North arcade is circa 1180. The Chancel and most of the remainder circa 1330. There is good C14 window tracery, especially in the east wall of the chancel. Small south window with fragments of medieval glass. Splendid richly carved font circa 1160. Pulpit C17.
The churchyard contains the war graves of 3 British soldiers of World War I.
