Saint Finnan's Isle Burial Ground Loch Shiel
Dalelia, Highland, Scotland
The island has been a cemetery for over thousand years, being an ancient burial place for the chiefs of Moidart (Clan Macdonald of Clanranald) and a site of pilgrimage for the penitent.
It has been extensively used for burials by the adjacent Protestant and Roman Catholic communities of Sunart and Moidart respectively.
The graveyard is still in use; the chief however has to decide who may rest here, and the chiefs are of course buried here, too.
Many of the deceased have their ashes discarded in this peaceful surrounding. For those who choose a traditional burial, the coffins have to be taken across by boat, from jetty to jetty roughly 150 yards, and then carried to their awarded plots: the Catholics towards the Northern side, the Protestants towards the South of the island.
The burial ground still contains many graves with ancient crosses, as well as the remains of a mediaeval church, ruined since the 1700s.
