The St. Lawrence County Alms House (aka Poor House) was completed in 1869 two miles downstream from Canton on the Grasse River. Over 700 of the poor house's residents were buried within the home’s cemetery. Many of the graves are unmarked, several of which are presently endangered by the river. The home was demolished in 1978.

The following is from the Guide to the Registers of tramps Applying for Relief, 1875-1876, (New York State Archives):
"Chapter 140 of the laws of 1875 required almshouses and poorhouses in New York State to keep records on individual inmates...a committee developed the initial standard form used for census reporting. These forms were used until 1905, when the State Board of Charities introduced a revised version. A form was completed for each inmate upon admission and batches were sent to the Board of Charities monthly as directed by the 1875 statute."
In research of the records, it is evident that the St.Lawrence County Alms House officials were delinquent in initiating the required form for each individual as many are missing.

Burials for this cemetery were extracted from Film# 007899504, Family and it is highly unlikely that the remains were claimed or removed by family or friends.
