A church dedicated to St. Michael was gifted in 956 by Otto I to Quedlinburg Abbey. The church was situated next to a cave dwelling called Volkmarskeller which had provided shelter to pilgrims for many years.
The cave and church became Kloster Michaelstein on 28 July 1146 and, supervised by Abbot Roger, provided shelter and solitude for Cistercian monks from Kamp Abbey.
The monastery was moved nearby to its present site between 1151 to 1167.
