Search Old Ward Cemetery:

Of the three cemeteries in Coffee County associated with the name, "Ward," Old Ward Cemetery seems to have been the first.

It was the original burial site of the first sheriff of Coffee County, Berry Hampton ("B.H.") Tanner. After the death of his wife, Eliza [Taylor] Tanner, his stone was removed to Campground Methodist Church in what is now Bacon County, Georgia. It remains unclear as to whether his remains were relocated along with the stone.

The cemetery is situated in [and around] a cluster of trees between two open fields, on private property. A combination of damage, inadvertently caused by heavy farm equipment, and neglect has left it in complete disrepair. The property owner [as of 2012] attempted, unsuccessfully, to persuade local authorities to declare the cemetery a historic site, in hopes of better preserving the few remaining headstones.
