The church was erected in 1876 and is the oldest colonial building in Namibia. It was used by the Rheinischen Missionsgesellschaft (Rhine Missions Society) until 1952 and has been a national monument since 1975. Missionaries, German soldiers and Herero people alike have been laid to rest here. The church is located at the southern end of Heroes Street and is part of a complex of small cemeteries and monuments, including the Herero Chiefs' Graves site. On the last weekend in August, an annual ceremony takes place at the complex to commemorate the Herero Uprising and the Battle of Waterberg.
The church is also known as Herero-Church oder Bantu-Church, according to its German-language Wikipedia page. (In German: Rheinische Missionskirche)
