David's Island--Civil War Hospital Burials

A military hospital opened on Davids' Island, across from New Rochelle, NY, and outside NYC, in 1862. It handled Civil War wounded from both sides, mostly north, but also south.

Burials were said to be on the grounds. These were to be moved to National Cemeteries later.

It is not always clear that this happened, or that remains were properly identified. The island was used for military purposes later, including Fort Slocum. No normal buildings remain. However, there are/were crypt-like structures, with a modern photo existing that shows New Rochelle police checking one of the structures.
