When the cemeteries inside Amman became full in the late 1970's, the Jordanian government designated new burial areas in the southeastern part of the city, namely in Sahab, over 12 miles (20 kms) away from Amman but within the Amman governerate. At the the time, this area was vast, empty, arid land but the Sahab area has grown into a large industrial area and with that it's living population has also increased. Sahab cemetery is far and away the largest cemetery in Amman.
