St. James Episcopal Church

There is a long tradition in Christian churches for members to be buried on the consecrated grounds of their house of worship. In 1979 the initial Memorial Garden, running along the North wall of St. George's Chapel, was dedicated.

The primary purpose of the Garden was to provide for the interment of ashes of members of St. James Church or their immediate families, and to offer a peaceful setting for rest, reflection and prayer.

Information about the people whose ashes are interred in the Garden may be found on the nameplates that are permanently attached to the upright bronze plaques. The cast bronze nameplates, arranged in order of interment, record the name and dates of birth and death of the individual.

In 1999, in order to allow for continuing interments, the North section was expanded to the East side of the Chapel. The landscaping, stonewalls and paths reflect the triple Gothic arch design of the stained glass windows above the East Garden.

In 2006, the trellis in the East Garden was reconstructed over a bench and planted with wisteria to provide a shady place for reflection and prayer.
